The rotating assembly of blades and hub is known as an&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Impeller\">impeller<\/a><\/em>,&nbsp;<em>rotor<\/em>, or&nbsp;<em>runner<\/em>. Usually, it is contained within some form of housing, or case.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fan_(machine)#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;This may direct the airflow, or increase safety by preventing objects from contacting the fan blades. Most fans are powered by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_motor\">electric motors<\/a>, but other sources of power may be used, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydraulic_motor\">hydraulic motors<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Handcrank\">handcranks<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internal_combustion_engine\">internal combustion engines<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mechanically, a fan can be any revolving&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/vane#English\">vane<\/a>, or vanes used for producing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air_current\">currents of air<\/a>. Fans produce air flows with high&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volume\">volume<\/a>&nbsp;and low&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pressure\">pressure<\/a>&nbsp;(although higher than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ambient_pressure\">ambient pressure<\/a>), as opposed to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gas_compressor\">compressors<\/a>&nbsp;which produce high pressures at a comparatively low volume.
