{"id":56,"date":"2021-05-27T10:28:20","date_gmt":"2021-05-27T10:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mexpansions.com\/learn\/?page_id=56"},"modified":"2021-05-27T11:09:17","modified_gmt":"2021-05-27T11:09:17","slug":"man","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/mexpansions.com\/learn\/man\/","title":{"rendered":"MAN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong>metropolitan area network<\/strong>&nbsp;(<strong>MAN<\/strong>) is a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mexpansions.com\/learn\/computer-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"http:\/\/mexpansions.com\/learn\/computer-network\/\">computer network<\/a>&nbsp;that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic region of the size of a&nbsp;metropolitan area. The term MAN is applied to the interconnection of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mexpansions.com\/learn\/lan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"http:\/\/mexpansions.com\/learn\/lan\/\">local area networks&nbsp;(LANs)<\/a> in a&nbsp;city&nbsp;into a single larger network which may then also offer efficient connection to a&nbsp;wide area network. The term is also used to describe the interconnection of several local area networks in a metropolitan area through the use of&nbsp;point-to-point connections&nbsp;between them&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"blob:http:\/\/mexpansions.com\/5361b232-8c69-4b10-b456-98ddeecac7c2\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Metro ethernet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The metro Ethernet rings that did not route IP traffic, instead used one of the various proprietary&nbsp;spanning tree protocol&nbsp;implementations, so that each MAN ring had a root bridge.&nbsp;Because&nbsp;layer 2&nbsp;switching can not operate if there is a loop in the network, the protocols to support L2 MAN rings all need to block redundant links and thus block part of the ring.<sup>[4]:41<\/sup>&nbsp;Capsuling protocols, such as&nbsp;Multiprotocol Label Switching&nbsp;(MPLS), were also deployed to address the drawbacks of operating L2 metro Ethernet rings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Uses of MAN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since a metropolitan area network only refers to relative size, it may also be used to describe a public or private network that attempts to provide connectivity that covers an entire metropolitan area.
